  • What is Karate?

  • Karate is one of the World’s most popular martial arts. Modern karate developed out of martial arts forms practiced in Okinawa, an island that is now part of Japan. Karate is a highly effective system of self-defence, and also an excellent form of exercise that promotes a number of life skills and values.
  • Try it for free.

  • There is no catch. We simply think that it's fair to make sure that you love karate before you put any money in it.
  • The low cost Karate club.

  • We operate as a non-profit organisation, none of the instructors are paid (We invest our time in the club, because we love Karate and we want to help people to discover it). The fees are calculated to cover the club expenses (hall rental, insurance...), so you can be assured that our prices will always be competitive.
  • Karate is a great form of exercise; there are many reasons to practice it:

  • It's fun.
  • It keeps you fit. Karate is a very complete sport, it develops strength, endurance, agility, coordination, balance and flexibility, everything you need to achieve a great fitness level.
  • It teaches respect and discipline.
  • It's a great stress reliever.
  • It is useful in a self-defence situation (though we hope that you won't have to put it to the test).
  • Whether it is through your martial arts classes or participating in martial arts competitions, every time you push yourself to train, you are building your confidence.
  • Martial arts classes are helping kids to build character and improve their social interaction.
  • Karate helps both the children who are being bullied, and the children who are bullying others. Karate training helps children who are being bullied to develop resilience, and helps children who are bullying others to stop.
  • We take children's safety seriously.

  • We endorse the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for children's sport in Ireland.
  • At least two adult instructors are present in the class at all times and training is conducted in an environment that is free from bullying, with respect between students being a cornerstone of the karate tradition.
  • All our instructors and our child protection officer are Garda vetted.
  • Our instructors also have done CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) training.
  • We are affiliated to one of the most recognised international karate federation.

  • The club is affiliated to Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF). Internationally SKIF is a widely recognized organisation having over 3.5 million members in over 120 countries. SKIF grades are recognised worldwide
  • Gradings are generally performed by Japanese karate masters coming to Ireland.
  • You are welcome.

  • All are welcome. We train everybody from ages 8 to 88.
  • You are fit enough to begin karate. Whatever your fitness level is, we'll bring you up to speed.
  • You are not too old to learn martial arts. Several of our members passed their black belt in their fifties. It is not uncommon for Japanese Karate experts to continue their martial arts practice after eighty.
  • So If you are in our neighborhood, don't hesitate to drop in and try a few lessons for free, we always enjoy seeing new people. Or simply contact Donal 089 417 9931 or send us an email instructors@svjkarate.net.
